Leather Pads Each of these leather pads has a specific compressed density. They work by narrowing the fit of your saddle. This may be necessary to create clearance of the saddle at the withers. One generous finger's width of clearance is our standard for a good fit. That is to say, when the saddle is loaded with the rider's weight, the rider should be able to move a finger between the top of the withers and gullet of the saddle. Padding alters the balance of the saddle. For example: When too much padding is used the pommel of the saddle will be too high and the cantle will be too low. This position of the saddle causes the flap to be excessively forward, and unsupportive of the rider's leg. Keep in mind... Finding and using the correct amount of padding is an important part of saddle use and back health. In general, the thickest pads are intended to be used on higher withers. Broad backs will most likely require very little padding. Excess padding will cause the saddle to fit too tightly and reduce the movement of the horse's back. In sufficient padding will cause the saddle to sit too low and have contact with the horse's withers. The variety of pads offered here allows compatible fit for a wide variety of back shapes. Horses' backs change shape throughout a competitive season, a year and a career. A change of pad may be required as this happens to optimize performance. |
